Members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) held a rally today in support of striking workers at the St. John’s International Airport.

The workers have been on strike since Sept. 11.

About 85 people, members of the Union of Canadian Transportation Employees, Local 90916, represented by PSAC, are on the picket line.

The workers provide operational and maintenance services, including runway clearing, building upkeep and emergency services.

They're employed by the St. John's International Airport Authority.

About 120 striking airport workers and supporters rallied today, with the strike now in its third months.

Local labour leaders called for St. John's airport management to return to the negotiating table. Representatives from sympathetic local unions also presented donations to the airport workers' strike fund.

The striking workers are demanding wage parity with works at Halifax International Airport. Workers have been without a collective agreement since 2009 and haven't had a wage increase in four years.

    What this misleading summary paragraph at the end doesn't say is that the union requested a job evaluation in 2009 which went on for 3 years. They've only been negotiating this year, during which time the union has only made one offer - 58% wage increase on a 4 yr retroactive contract, which would expire in 2013, requiring this foolishness to start all over again.

    Typical Union BS; they ran an ad in a local paper listing their wages and the wages in halifax; the only thing the ad didn't clarify was that the wages for workers at St. John's were 2009 wages. They didn't use curent wages or the wages that were offered to them. They expect support yet they turn to lies and half-truths to try and make their case.

    Striking at a person’s personal residence or home is shameful. Business is business but taking it to a person’s home is downright disrespectful of people and community. You'll get no respect from the public or board that way......
