Liberal leadership candidate talks about his stance on N.L. issues

Federal Liberal leadership candidate Justin Trudeau is in St. John's today.

Trudeau had lunch with supporters before visiting Mes Amis daycare on Torbay Road to speak and have a Christmas singalong with the children.

The Telegram was granted an exclusive interview with Trudeau, in which he spoke of his stance on issues concerning Newfoundland and Labrador, including DFO's control over the fishery, new prisons, and Muskrat Falls. Premier Kathy Dunderdale is expected to make an announcement about the project this evening.

"We have to be moving towards developing more renewable sources of energy," he said. "There are questions being asked about the liabilities of this specific project and the environmental concerns around it and I'm not going to weigh in on the details... it's just something we have to make sure is being done the right way to keep public trust in projects like this."

Trudeau, saying the current provincial Liberal party is in "leadership renewal," also spoke of the Harper government's decision to close the Marine Rescue Centre in St. John's, calling it a "big mistake."

Nice to Justin with children. This honest, warm interaction with children says a lot about this man. It is time we had empathy and warmth in the political sphere rather than coldness or anger. It is time for Canadians to vote in a new generation of politicians like Justin-a leader who cares. Goodness knows we need one.

The biggest potential disaster in Canadian history (well, since the original Trudeau) came here for a singalong? How nice

Visiting Mes Amis daycare for a speech and Christmas singalong......really? All the way from "up along" for that. I guess he is recruiting voters, as it will take their vote before he sees Prime Ministership. Some people still think they are a "shoe in" on daddy's legacy. Sad.....
