St. John’s — Two 20-year-old men from Bell Island have sentenced to 900 days in prison as the result of events the judge calls a “one-day crime spree.”
Wayne Boone and Christian Jenkins appeared in St. John's provincial court on Tuesday to hear Judge Michael Madden hand down the sentences.
Family and friends of the offenders cried and hugged one another after both men were led away from the courtroom in handcuffs.
On Aug. 30, both men were involved in several assaults and robberies on Bell Island. Madden said their action were largely fuelled by alcohol consumption, while noting mental health issues were also a factor.
Boone was also being sentenced on a separate assault matter on Feb. 25. His sentence on that matter will run concurrent to his sentence for the Aug. 30 incidents.
Neither of the men applied for bail and have been remanded in custody for 111 days. Madden gave them 1 1/2 days credit for time served, meaning they have another 734 days remaining on their sentences — a little more than two years in total.
