The bail hearing for a 33-year-old man accused of sexually assaulting a woman walking from downtown St. John’s earlier this month got underway Wednesday morning and is scheduled to continue on Thursday.

Sofyan Boalag was back in St. John’s provincial court for the bail hearing. Case details discussed in a bail hearing are subject to a publication ban.

Boalag, who is said to be from Algeria, entered the courtroom in handcuffs wearing a green T-shirt. He cracked his knuckles at one point while waiting for the bail hearing to begin and was otherwise quiet.

Boalag was arrested on Dec. 10 in the parking lot of the Village Shopping Centre in St. John’s. His arrest relates to an incident where a woman was sexually assaulted in a violent manner.

Police initially reported that the perpetrator walked with her from downtown St. John’s towards the centre city area and then committed the assault.

The accused is charged with sexual assault with a weapon (a knife), sexual assault causing bodily harm, robbery with violence, resisting arrest, possession of a concealed weapon, two counts for possession of property obtained by crime, attempted strangulation, and unauthorized possession of a prohibited or restricted weapon.

His bail hearing is scheduled to resume at 9:30 a.m. Thursday.
