• Andre Beaupré, the former deputy mayor of South Brook, can’t drink his town’s water due to contamination fears, but says he’s more concerned about the river running by his home. When the dam holding back tailings from the former Gullbridge copper mine, about 25 kilometres from his town, broke open Monday morning, it sent an unknown amount of toxic material into the local waters and flowing towards the town. “I live right on the water. That river flows right down by my house here,” Beaupré said.
• The Nunatsiavut Government is clearing the air on where it stands on Muskrat Falls. In her televised speech earlier this week Premier Kathy Dunderdale’s referenced the project’s being able to progress because of “grand partnerships” achieved with Labrador’s aboriginal peoples.
“The premier left the impression the Nunatsiavut Government endorses Muskrat Falls, and indicated that we have been consulted on the project,” Nunatsiavut president Sarah Leo stated. “That is simply not the case.”
• Hey, you — shouldn’t you be home with loved ones or having your last feed of fish and chips right now, given that the world is scheduled to end tomorrow? You know, the whole Mayan calendar, end of the world, planetary apocalypse thing?
Dec. 21, 2012 marks the end of the 5,125-year Mayan calendar and, some believers say, the end of the world. The mythical planet Nibiru is headed on a collision course with Earth, they say, and will hit Friday at 7:42 a.m. NT.
