The man arrested in St. John's after a string of sexual assaults in the downtown area has been denied bail.

After a number of postponements, the bail hearing for Sofyan Boalag, 33, which was first called in provincial court Wednesday, wrapped up Friday morning.

Boalag was arrested by police in the parking lot of the Village Mall Dec. 10 and charged in connection with a violent sexual assault that took place early in the morning the previous day.

According to police, a woman leaving a downtown establishment met a man and walked with him towards the city centre, where she was assaulted by him.

Boalag is facing nine charges in relation to the incident, including sexual assault causing bodily harm, sexual assault with a weapon (a knife), attempted strangulation or choking, and possession of property obtained by crime.

Earlier on the day of his arrest, the RNC held a media conference, saying it was considering the suspect wanted in connection with the assault might be responsible for four other sexual assaults reported in the same area over the past two months.

In each case, the victim was a woman walking alone late at night or in the wee hours of the morning, and all the assaults happened outside. The description of the suspect - 30-40 years old, tall and slim with dark skin - was the same in each case.

Boalag has not been charged in relation with those assaults, but police say they are investigating whether he could be connected.
