A 63-year-old man died Thursday in Hopedale after the snowmobile he was driving went through the harbour ice in the Labrador community.

The RCMP says several people witnessed the incident immediately went to help the man. He was pulled from the water, but was unresponsive.

CPR was started on the victim and he was transported to the local health clinic but was unable to be revived.

An autopsy has been ordered.

RCMP note the harbour is major travel route for local residents and only recently began being used.

This tragedy is very sad. However, never take "nature" for granted. If the thickness of the ice had been checked, this man may still be alive. Surely most people in Labrador communities have ice augers. Deepest condolences to the family.
