The provincial government is advising those living along coastlines and waterways to be ready for stormy weather conditions on Sunday.
In a news release issued Saturday afternoon by Fire and Emergency Services — Newfoundland and Labrador, government said an intense storm is due to cross western and central Newfoundland Sunday through Monday.
Snow is forecasted to change to rain, according to the release, with strong winds anticipated. Western Newfoundland and southern Labrador may experience blizzard-like conditions.
Pertinent to coastal areas, storm surges in excess of 60 centimetres are expected for the southern Gulf of St Lawrence, Northumberland Strait, Cabot Strait and parts of the south coast of the island. Storm surge conditions are due to range between 50-60 centimetres along the northeast coast.
Combined with strong winds, government said the storm may produce pounding surf and strong wave activity. It is advising residents to avoid coastal areas if possible during the storm.
