Two people died today after the car they were in collided with a Department of Transportation snowplow on the Northern Peninsula Highway, Deer Lake RCMP confirm.

The accident occurred about 2:30 p.m. when the small car travelling south and the north-bound snowplow collided on slippery roads with falling snow.

The deceased were the only two occupants in the vehicle. The snowplow driver was uninjured.

Police and other emergency personnel remain on the scene at this time and the investigation is continuing to determine the exact cause of the accident.

The motoring public is being asked to remain away from the area until the road can be reopened. It is expected the road may reopen to one lane of traffic within the next hour.

RCMP in Deer Lake are advising of a road closure due to a serious motor vehicle collision on the Northern Peninsula Highway (Route 430 Viking Trail).

The RCMP says anyone planning on using this route is advised that the road will be closed for the next three to five hours while police investigate.

The area is about one kilometre north of the intersection of Route 430 and Cormack access.

The RCMP would like anyone travelling in that area to stay away from this area or make alternate plans until the road can be cleared and traffic can resume.

The RCMP will make a further announcement when the road is reopened.
