• Visitor restrictions at Eastern Health facilities relating to the spread of influenza illness have been expanded to several hospitals. Late Sunday afternoon, the health authority announced that the Health Sciences Centre, St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital and the Janeway Children’s Health and Rehabilitation Centre — all in St. John’s — are closed to visitors. A total of 16 Eastern Health facilities are now restricting visits due to the prevalence of influenza illness or flu-like symptoms.
• Looks like NHL hockey is headed back to the ice. After a marathon bargaining session a tentative deal was announced Sunday. The Telegram headed out to the rink to find out how people are taking the news. “Without hockey, I wouldn’t be the same. I’m going to be a lot better now that hockey’s back. • The clang of metal on metal, the beeping from heavy equipment in reverse and the roar of passing buses could be heard as expected at the construction site at Long Harbour on Wednesday, July 11, 2012 — the day before a five-day wildcat strike. The labour action silenced the work site and was in violation of both a standing collective agreement and a court order. It cost the project millions. In the first of a two-part series, reporter Ashley Fitzpatrick examines the strike, the factors that lead to it and the aftermath.
