The Town of Conception Bay South is welcoming a new business to the municipality.

Harris Rebar, a division of Harris Steel Ltd. held an open house at its new west end location today at 1497 Conception Bay Highway.

During the event, visitors were given a tour of the new 50,000-square-foot fabrication facility which currently employs 22 employees. The business, however, has employed as many as 90 employees at peak periods within the past two years.

“Conception Bay South gave us the opportunity to expand our operations and we expect to be here for a long time to come," said area manager Basil MacLean . "The town has been great to work with and has welcomed us with open arms. We are looking forward to becoming an active member of the business community and anticipate great prospects ahead.”

“We are thrilled to welcome Harris Rebar to Conception Bay South and be part of their expansion plans," said Mayor Woodrow French. "As the town continues to experience rapid residential growth, we anticipate a significant increase in commercial growth as well. Conception Bay South is situated in an ideal commercial and industrial location to take advantage of the major projects that are underway on the northeast Avalon. In 2012 the town’s commercial starts increased 58 percent over 2011. We fully expect this trend to continue.”

Harris Rebar is the largest rebar fabricator in North America, having almost 80 branches throughout Canada and the United States.  Owned by Nucor Steel, the company is North America's largest steel producer and largest user of scrap metals.

Currently involved in the supply and installation of the reinforcing steel for the Vale smelter in Long Harbour, the company has just completed a two-year contract at The Iron Ore Co. of Canada Mine site in Labrador City and is currently working on numerous bridges across the island.

Other recently completed projects include: The Glacier Arena, Mount Pearl; Hampton Inn, Stavanger Drive; the parking garage at the Health Sciences Centre, St. John’s and a School in Carbonear. The company is currently awaiting the start of a new hotel in the St. John’s downtown core.

MacLean said the company's strength can be attributed to dedication to its vision statement.  “We believe that every one of our teammates can help achieve our vision of being the safest, most profitable, most customer-focused rebar contractor in North America,” he said.
