Commuters driving home from work Thursday will face blowing snow and reduced visibility as Environment Canada continues its’ winter storm watch for St. John’s and the area.
Meteorologist Herb Thoms warned drivers to exercise caution on the roads.
“Thursday night is not going to be very pleasant,” he said. “If people have to travel, they might want to change their plans.”
Environment Canada is predicting wind gusts of up to 100 kilometres an hour and a potential snowfall of 40-60 centimetres in St. John’s by Friday evening depending on where the system tracks.

A winter storm watch is in effect for the Avalon, Bonavista and Burin peninsulas with snow expected to start Thursday afternoon,
Winds could reach 100 km/h Thursday night causing blowing snow and reduced visibility.
Environment Canada says high winds and heavy snow may develop during the evening and overnight Thursday, and into Friday with total snowfall amounts between 40-60 centimetres by Friday night.
A snowfall warning is in effect for then southwest coast from Burgeo to the Connaigre Peninsula, with heavy snow expected to develop on Thursday morning. Strong winds and heavy snow will combine in the afternoon to give reduced visibilities in blowing snow.
Snowfall amounts of 15 centimetres are expected by Thursday evening.
Environment Canada says an upper trough currently over Northern Ontario will track northeastward today and is forecast to spawn the development of a low pressure centre near P.E.I. early Thursday morning. This low will begin to intensify as it tracks south of Newfoundland Thursday night, and is then expected to drift slowly southeastward over the Grand Banks on Friday.
