Norcon Marine Services has been awarded a contract to provide service between Petit Forte and South East Bight with the MV Joseph M.

The Department of Transportation and Works said in a news release, the vessel has arrived in the province and is currently undergoing work to prepare it for this run. It is scheduled to join the provincial fleet in late February.

Beginning Sunday, Jan. 13, Rencontre East and South East Bight will move to a weekly alternating schedule provided by the MV Northern Seal and a helicopter service. Each community will receive a week on-week off ferry service, with helicopter service offered when the respective community is without the ferry. This interim schedule will be in place until the MV Joseph M enters service.

The MV Hazel McIsaac, meanwhile, will leave Green Bay for annual refit on Thursday, Jan. 17. During the refit, service for Little Bay Islands and Long Island will be provided by the swing vessel, the MV Sound of Islay.

Current schedule information for all provincial ferry services can be found at: or by calling 1-888-638-5454.

This plan is the worse by far the Government has come up with yet . Unbelieveable that the government would take our ferry and give us a helicopter service in the middle of winter we had the chopper here in march of last year and it didnt work out then because of trips being cancell because of the weather. Then to hear that they are taking our ferry because they want to put the new ferry Hazel MccIsaacs on annual refit come on now cant the refit be postponed for a couple of months instead of leaving two communities in dire straits . PLEASE WAKE UP AND MAKE THE RIGHT DECISIONS .

This plan to share a ferry and a helicopter between 2 communities in the dead of winter is utterly ridiculous! How often do you think a helicopter will fly in these winter conditions? The chopper can't fly after dark or in snow or in winds - hello!! It's winter in Newfoundland! The Sound of Islay which is now servicing South East Bight is leaving to replace a vessel for routine maintenance, we could probably swallow the news a bit easier if there was a vessel broken down in the system. The government has to come to its senses and realize this move is a mistake!
