• Approximately 50 people took part in a Saturday afternoon demonstration at the Avalon Mall in St. John’s to show support for the Idle No More movement advocating environmental protection and aboriginal rights. Those involved in the peaceful demonstration were initially told by mall security to leave the area, but according to Erin Piatt, one of the participants in Saturday’s event, they eventually performed three songs inside before moving outside. “They said that we couldn’t do it,” she said. “We waited for everybody to show up until 2 p.m., and then we decided to go ahead anyway.”
• Some residents of the St. John’s metro area were still without power Sunday, three days after a snowstorm first hit the island portion of Newfoundland and Labrador.
The number of Newfoundland Power customers with no electricity in their homes did, however, drop sharply over the course of the weekend.
