Youth charged with theft of vehicle, extortion

A 17-year-old male resident of Corner Brook is facing numerous charges after he allegedly took a vehicle without consent and demanded money be paid to him or the vehicle would be damaged.

The youth is charged with assault, theft of a motor vehicle, extortion, uttering threats and breaching court orders.

The RNC says about 3:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 10, police received a complaint from a Massey Drive couple that their vehicle had been taken without their consent.

They also reported that the person responsible for taking the vehicle threatened to cause damage to it if a sum of money was not paid to him.

The accused is also alleged to have committed an assault on the owner of the vehicle after he had returned it to him. The vehicle was not damaged in this incident.

On Jan. 11, about 4:15 p.m., the accused was arrested and charged. He was held in custody and attended court via tele-conference on Jan. 12 and was remanded at that time to attend court today in Corner Brook.

RNC Patrol Services is continuing to investigate this incident.
