The community of Flatrock is mourning the loss of its mayor, who died Monday morning following a battle with cancer.

Kevin Butt, 65, had served on council since 2005 and became mayor in 2008 when predecessor Kevin Parsons entered provincial politics through a by-election. He returned to the mayor’s chair by acclamation during the 2009 municipal election.

Butt worked in a managerial position with Eastern Health at the Health Sciences Centre in St. John’s for close to 40 years. A long-time volunteer in the community, Butt was also active in senior hockey circles with the Flatrock Flyers.

He served on the board responsible for the Jack Byrne Arena in Torbay and spent many years volunteering for local minor hockey.

In a message posted Monday morning on its website, the Town of Flatrock said news of Butt’s death had shocked staff and council members.

The wake for Butt is scheduled to take place Tuesday evening and Wednesday at Caul’s Funeral Home in Torbay. The funeral service for Butt is scheduled for Thursday at St. Michael's Church in Flatrock at 10 a.m.
