The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary (RNC) is reminding all pedestrians and motorists to use extra care and caution when walking or driving during the winter.
In a news release today, the RNC is urging all pedestrians to wear reflective clothing in low light and dark conditions, especially after heavy snowfall when sidewalks are snow covered or where sidewalks don't exist, which may force pedestrian traffic out onto the roadways.
The RNC says people who use a wheelchair for transportation and must use the roadway should also use reflective clothing or equipment to ensure safety and visibility.
Police are urging motorists to be aware that pedestrians may also use the roadways.
The RNC offers the following tips to promote pedestrian and motorist safety:
• Ensure your vehicle is equipped with proper winter tires which are in good condition;
• Fill the windshield wash reservoir and ensure that your vehicle is equipped with winter wipers;
• Clean snow off all windows, headlights, and indicator lights; and remove loose snow from roof, trunk and bonnet;
• Ensure windows are defogged;
• Reduce your speed. The posted speed limit is a maximum speed for ideal driving conditions. Remember snow means slow;
• Increase the distance between you and the car in front of you;
• When approaching intersections, slow down well in advance of the intersection to ensure safe stopping;
• Always practice the three Cs of driving — care, caution and control;
