An 18-year-old female was sentenced today to nine months open custody to be served in a group home for her part in an attack on a disabled man last September in St. John’s.
The young woman earlier pleaded guilty in court in St. John’s to charges of conspiracy to commit a robbery, robbery, and assault causing bodily harm.
She had spent three months in custody after being charged and will also be under community supervision and on probation for four-and-a-half months following the end of the open custody.
The woman also pleaded guilty to charges in connection with another incident. Those charges included fraud, damage to property, possession of stolen property and breach of probation.
The attack on the disabled man occurred Sept. 28, 2012.
According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary, five teens allegedly lured the 24-year-old man, who has a physical disability, away from the parking lot at Mount Pearl Square in Mount Pearl.
The victim was led into a wooded area, where the group jumped him. He was assaulted and his valuables were taken.
The victim went to a nearby store for help and called the RNC. He was later treated in hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
The five teenagers faced charges including conspiracy to commit an indictable offence and robbery with violence.
Two of the females allegedly involved were also charged with damaging government property for damaging a vehicle they were riding in while en route from the Whitbourne youth correctional facility to provincial court in St. John's.

Wow....what a joke! This was a brutal assault on an innocent defenseless person....shame on the judge for sure.
