Local entertainers nominated for national awards

Canadian TV’s Gemini Awards and film’s Genie Awards have merged to form the Canadian Screen Awards — and a number of Newfoundlanders and Labradorians are among this year’s nominees.

Nominations for the first annual Canadian Screen Awards were released Tuesday, encompassing television, film and digital media.

Rick Mercer received two nominations: one with co-producer Gerald Lunz in the Best Music, Variety, Sketch Comedy or Talk Program or Series category, and the other with co-writers Rick Currie, Greg Eckler, Chris Finn, Tim Steeves and George Westerholm in the Best Writing in a Variety or Sketch Comedy Program or Series, both for his CBC TV show, “Rick Mercer Report.”

Shaun Majumder is up for the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Continuing Leading Comedic Role for the “22 Minutes” 2012 Christmas special, while Cathy Jones is vying for the same award in the female category, for the same hour-long special.

Gordon Pinsent has been nominated for the Best Performance in a Guest Role, Dramatic Series for his portrayal of Maurice Becker in a “Republic of Doyle” episode called “Mirror, Mirror.”

Wabush native Shawn Doyle is up for the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series for his portrayal of Canada’s first prime minister, Sir John A. MacDonald, in the CBC TV movie “John A: Birth of a Country.”

St. John’s native Bob Cole is nominated for Best Sports Play-by-Play announcer for his work on “Hockey Night in Canada,” while National Film Board producer Annette Clarke of St. John’s is nominated in the Best Short Documentary category along with Ariel Nasr for the film, “The Boxing Girls of Kabul.”

“Out With Dad,” a web series starring Darryl Dinn of Labrador, is nominated for Best Original Program or Series Produced for Digital Media, Fiction.

The winners of the Canadian Screen Awards will be presented during a gala hosted by Martin Short airing live on CBC TV March 3, starting at 8:30 p.m.

    These " awards " are awarded to entertainment people by entertainment people ! With the public not being involved , such incestuous arrangements render the " awards " valueless.
