Snow squall warnings, watches in effect for much of Newfoundland

RCMP Holyrood Detachment advises motorists that driving conditions on the Trans Canada Higway are treacherous between Butterpot Park and Witless Bay line. Motorists should use extreme care and caution.

•••

Roads are snow-covered and slippery this morning in the St. John’s region, and residents are digging out after last nights snowfall.

Environment Canada has snow squall warnings in effect for much of the west and south coasts of the island part of the province today, and a snow squall watch in effect for much of the east coast.

This will result in potential snowfall accumulations of 15 to 20 centimetres and reduced visibilities along the west and south coasts today, and 10 centimetres and reduced visibilities to develop along the east coast tonight.

Strong cold west to southwesterly winds will cause snow squalls to develop along the south and west coasts. These snow squalls will produce near zero visibilities and significant snowfall accumulations over brief periods of time. Visibilities will also be reduced in blowing snow, especially over exposed areas.

Conditions are expected to persist throughout the next few days.

Motorists are advised to exercise caution as conditions will be quite variable and can deteriorate very rapidly.

The forecast for today in the St. John’s region calls for a mix of sun and cloud, becoming cloudy this afternoon with flurries and local snow squalls. Amount 2 cm in snow squalls.
