A 28-year-old off-duty volunteer firefighter was arrested early this morning in Sheshatshiu after a fire truck was stolen from the fire department in the community.
The accused was charged with impaired driving after his blood alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit.
RCMP in Sheshatshiu say they responded to a call about 12:30 a.m. this morning that the truck had been stolen.
Officers made immediate patrols and located the fire truck being driven on Tsheniss Drive near the school. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver fled on foot. He was apprehended within minutes.
Charges include theft of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, impaired driving while over 80 mg, resisting/obstructing a police officer and driving without a valid driver's license.
A court date has been set for Feb. 27 at provincial Court in Happy Valley/Goose Bay. The fire truck was not damaged and returned to the fire chief a short time later.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
