Volunteer firefighter charged with stealing fire truck, impaired driving

A 28-year-old off-duty volunteer firefighter was arrested early this morning in Sheshatshiu after a fire truck was stolen from the fire department in the community.

The accused was charged with impaired driving after his blood alcohol level was found to be more than twice the legal limit.

RCMP in Sheshatshiu say they responded to a call about 12:30 a.m. this morning that the truck had been stolen.

Officers made immediate patrols and located the fire truck being driven on Tsheniss Drive near the school. A traffic stop was conducted and the driver fled on foot. He was apprehended within minutes.

Charges include theft of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, impaired driving while over 80 mg, resisting/obstructing a police officer and driving without a valid driver's license.

 A court date has been set for Feb. 27 at provincial Court in Happy Valley/Goose Bay. The fire truck was not damaged and returned to the fire chief a short time later.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.

    It is nice to at least see that some money was spent on an item of value (firetruck) instead of being squandered. He will be dealt with harshly by the justice system there and get a weekend of house arrest - maybe.

    Given the facts contained in the article, it is probably that the theft charge was laid in error. There was clearly no intent (or prospect) of converting the firetruck to his own, which element is required for conviction of theft under section 322 of the Criminal Code. It could be replaced by the lesser charge by way of summary process under section 335 which is the possession of a vehicle without the owner's consent (otherwise known as 'joyriding'). The balance of the charges are nonetheless quite serious - in particular, drunk driving of a vehicle which by its nature could have caused serious injury or death.

    ...stealing a fire truck? - in Sheshatshiu? Seriously this guy is not one I would want using the same judgement in fighting a fire or saving a life. Hopefully the punishment is not as ridiculous as the facts surrounding the crime.
