The Avalon East District RCMP is advising motorists travelling on the Trans Canada Highway to use extreme caution in the area between Butterpot Park and the Witless Bay Line.

Road conditions are deteriorating quickly with whiteouts and very slippery conditions, police say.

Holyrood RCMP members are presently on the scene of two motor vehicle accidents in which vehicles have slid off into the median.

There are no injuries to report but traffic will be slowed/stopped to allow crews to recover vehicles from scene.

RCMP officers will be patrolling in the area and are requesting the public to use extreme caution in the area or use and alternate route.

(Earlier story)

Environment Canada has issued snow squall warnings for many areas of the province today, including St. John's and the Avalon Peninsula.

These conditions are already prompting police to issue warnings to motorists to drive with caution.

The RCMP says the Trans-Canada Highway from Clarenville to Goobies is snow covered and driving conditions are very poor with near zero visibility.

Motorists are also advised by the RCMP to use extreme caution in the Hansen Highway and White's Road area in the Stephenville area because of snow squalls and whiteouts.

In the St. John's area, two to four cms of snow is forecast and as much as 10 cms in snow squalls. Winds are expected to be from the southwest with gusts as high as 70 ams an hour.

Blowing snow is expected to continue over exposed areas this evening.

Friday morning, a few flurries are in the forecast, ending in the morning then a mix of sun and cloud with 40 percent chance of flurries. Westerly winds are expected to be between 30 and 50 ams in the morning and gusting to 70 ams at night.

Some parts of the province may see up to 15 cms of snow in snow squalls.

Full forecast details for the province can be found on Environment Canada's website http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/forecast/canada/index_e.html?id=NL.
