A Russian cruise ship, stranded in St. John’s for more than two years, was drifting towards the open sea Thursday evening after its tow line broke.
The Lyubov Orlova was towed from St. John’s harbour Wednesday afternoon by the tugboat Charlene Hunt, but according to the Canadian Coast Guard the tow line broke sometime Thursday afternoon.
At 6 p.m. Thursday the Orlova was about 13 kilometres off Cape Race with 30-35 knot winds blowing from the west and five- to six-metre seas. Nobody is aboard the former cruise ship.
The tug remains on the scene and is assessing how to reattach the cable. The Canadian Coast Guard Ship Cape Roger is en route to monitor the situation.
