David Wells, former deputy CEO of the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board, has been appointed to the Senate.

A news release sent out from the Prime Minister's Office today said "Wells has over 30 years experience in international business and management of government and regulatory affairs."

He's filling the seat left vacant by Ethel Cochrane, who reached mandatory retirement age last fall.

Wells was one of five senators appointed today — he was the only one from Newfoundland and Labrador.

Unless somebody decides to retire early, another senate seat won't come open in the province until George Baker reaches mandatory retirement in September 2017.

The prime minister should seriously consider keeping the senate vacancies as long as possible. Its by far the greatest bang for the peoples canuck buck.

Ah, a fitting reward; at least he has experience; he practised by snoozing at the Sleepy Board; now he can kick back and go comotose in the Senate. Walk gently when you go by his office and whisper softly. Is it just me? is anyone else awake and witnessing these platant Tory patronage appointments? Does anyone care anymore? or, has our acceptance level stooped so low that its expected and ok?

i am sick of my taxes going into this old age home, OOPS! i mean the senate. another example of friends looking after friends. its time to rid of the corruption that lie within and abolish the senate or give us the taxpayer the right to have a say/elected, which old betty, or oldtimer gets to sit in a cushy seat and collect a fat salary which they don't deserve. ITS SICKENING !
