Two snowmobilers found themselves in a spot of trouble last night. The father and son were snowmobiling about one mile in the woods from the highway near Great Barasway when the father, 64, began suffering from a medical condition. His 41 year old son called for assistance from his cell phone. Weather conditions were deteriorating with very poor visibility. Placentia RCMP called on the assistance of the Avalon North Wolverines Search and Rescue. Using a signal from the cell phone the rescuers were able to pin point the location of the men and assist them in getting out of the woods. The older male was transported to hospital via an awaiting ambulance and treated.

With the harsh winter weather affecting our area of the country, RCMP are asking outdoor enthusiasts to watch the weather carefully prior to and during winter activities. Proper clothing, planning and survival gear are recommended whenever you venture out to enjoy any winter activity.

Here are a few winter safety reminders supplied by the Canadian Red Cross:

Wear the gear. Avoid frostbite and hypothermia by dressing in layers and keeping your head, ears and hands covered.

Be smart. Always wear your helmet when participating in winter activities such as snowmobiling, skiing and skating.

Alcohol and winter activities don’t mix. Stay sober while participating in any winter activities.

Test the thickness of ice before venturing out on it.

Avoid hazards. Survey the area and identify the potential danger spots.

Supervise children. Adult supervision is the best protection for children
