Kelligrews hit-and-run leads to arrest

A 23-year-old male has been arrested in connection to a hit-and-run incident in Kelligrews that happened shortly after midnight on Sunday.

According to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary’s overnight report, the collision did not result in any injuries. Police arrested the suspect a short while after the incident.

Stephen Edward Gellately appeared in weekend and statutory holidays court in St. John’s on Sunday. He has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, operation of a vehicle while impaired, refusal of the breathalyzer, and failure to remain at the scene of an accident.

Gellately was released from custody and is scheduled to return to provincial court on Feb. 27.

    It's thing of this nature that set a bad example for all of us. Hopefully this person is not in any position to teach this sort of behavior to anyone. If the above comment refers to this individual it's just unreal that he is able to commit the same horrible offences again. I drive my children on these streets and my daughter was recently hit by a impaired driver. Crimes like these need to be punished accordingly, if not what happens the next time? My child or yours is taken due to someone's careless disregard for their life and anyone else in the path they take. At 23 this child should be ashamed and rethink these thoughtless actions. Maybe a bit of time spend incarsarated would change his outlook on life and how he puts people's lives in jeopardy. These are just the thoughts of a mother.

    Good to see the police are cracking down on repeat offenders that get away with it all the time.
