The Telegram

The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Monday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Sports section.

• The tugboat tasked with hauling the MV Lyubov Orlova to the Dominican Republic was ordered to return to St. John’s harbour on Sunday, three days after the towing line snapped. In a statement released to media, Transport Canada said it ordered the Charlene Hunt to return to St. John’s “because of safety concerns for the vessel and its crew.” Transport Canada said the Lyubov Orlova remained adrift as of early Sunday evening and was not blocking navigation routes or leaking pollutants into the marine environment.

• While Adam Daniels appreciates the offer from the federal government to provide credit protection for hundreds of thousands of student loan borrowers affected by a security breach, the former Memorial University student says such an offer should have come at an earlier date.

“I think it’s a small gesture and I appreciate it, but ... as I though about it more and more, another sort of sad reality for me is this happened in (November), and I realize that the federal government probably wanted to have some steps in place before they alerted the public, but it’s kind of funny that three weeks in, they’ve announced this, and they didn’t think of it before.

• About 70 people gathered at the Colonial Building near Bannerman Park in St. John’s Sunday in support of the Idle No More Provincial Day of Action.

“Our intention today is to bring awareness, education and healing,” she said. “Idle No More is unifying First Nations peoples of Canada to speak about the effects of colonialism and aboriginal autonomy and, more specifically, the recent changes in federal legislation. What many Canadians don’t know is that much of the land that contains Canada’s rich resources is First Nations territory,” said Janelle Duval, one of the organizers.
