• The president of the American Hockey League says St. John’s is a candidate to be the host city for the league’s 2014 All-Star Game and confirms discussions about that possibility have been held, but Dave Andrews says the location for next year’s All-Star event isn’t the only thing to be determined, because the format for the game could change, too.
“St. John’s is certainly a candidate and we’ve had good discussions with Glenn (Stanford) and the IceCaps organization,” Andrews said Monday after the AHL’s 2013 Hall of Fame induction ceremonies in Providence, R.I.
• A former post-secondary student in Corner Brook whose personal information was lost by the federal government in a breach of its student loan records says government is making too much of its offer to provide credit protection at no cost.
Human Resources and Skills Development Canada says it has contacted Equifax Canada, a credit management company, to provide those affected with credit and identity protection services.
Leanne Renouf had already contacted Equifax Canada and had her account flagged at no cost — Equifax never charges a fee to flag a credit file, except for in two Canadian provinces, she says.
“Manitoba and Ontario, they had to pay a $5.65 fee, but I’m in Corner Brook myself, and I already got this flag put on my account, and it was free for me. So basically, it’s saying (government) is doing this for us and paying to have everybody covered, but more than half were covered anyway, because it was free.”
• A St. John’s judge had no problem giving a convicted armed robber exactly what he asked for in provincial court Monday.
“He wants a federal (jail) term and I’m going to give him one,” Judge Greg Brown said.
Minutes later, he sentenced Curtis Robert Hickey to two years and five months behind bars.
