Trinity Conception RCMP are investigating the cause of a house fire early Wednesday morning in Harbour Grace.

Police say the fire was reported around 3 a.m. on Water Street.

A man and woman who owned the home were the lone occupants and escaped the blaze on their own.

The RCMP said they were alerted to the fire by a smoke detector inside the house.

The man had to be treated at Carbonear General Hospital for smoke inhalation. Firefighters were able to put out the fire, but the home did sustain extensive damage.
