UPDATE: No injuries in house fire in St. John's

There were no injuries in a house fire today at 37 Freshwater Rd. in St. John's.

The St. John's Regional Fire Department said there was no one home at the time and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The house backs onto Pennywell Road and the fire was fought on both sides at the time.

SJRFD Shift-Supt. Don Byrne said the department got a couple of calls on the fire just after 1 p.m. today and, upon arrival about a minute after the call, the first crews were met with heavy smoke coming from the rear of the home — which has an address of 6 Pennywell Rd. — and there was also fire in the front of the home at address as 37 Freshwater Rd.

Crews were able to quickly knock down the fire as it was beginning to spread upstairs.

Significant damage was caused to the inside of the home with lots of smoke damage upstairs.
