More than 20 millimetres of rain driven by strong winds over the past 48 hours has forced a couple to evacuate their rented home in Benoits Cove, a few kilometres northwest of Corner Brook.

The Canadian Red Cross was contacted for assistance after basement flooding Thursday night reached a level that rendered the house unsafe.

The Red Cross is helping the two tenants with emergency lodging and food for a day or two by which time conditions are expected to improve so the water can be pumped out and the home's foundation, electrical and heating systems can be checked.
