Information sessions announced for 2013 personal use seal and temporary licences

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans says there will be seal information sessions for new applicants requesting Personal Use Seal licences and for temporary seal licences at a number of locations later this month.

The sessions will take place: Monday, Feb 18 at 7 p.m. in Clarenville at St. Jude’s Hotel; Tuesday, Feb 19 at 7 p.m. in Carbonear at Fong’s Motel; and Wednesday, Feb. 20 at 7 p.m. in Conception Bay South at the Royal Canadian Legion on Legion Road.

Persons interested in obtaining a Personal Use Licence or Temporary Seal Licence for the 2013 seal fishery can register by contacting the DFO Licencing office in Bay Roberts 786-3960; Mount Pearl 772-5045; or Clarenville 466-8272.

Persons obtaining a new personal use or a temporary licence must have: proof of age (18 or older); a firearms safety/hunter education certificate; and proof they have attended a seal information session.

As with any sealing activity, Personal Use Seal Licence holders must follow the Marine Mammal Regulations, conditions of licence and all sealing activity is monitored by fishery officers.

Seal information sessions for new applicants requesting Personal Use Seal Licences or temporary seal licences will include training in the three-step process of ensuring humane death.
