The oil refinery at Come By Chance was hit with a site-wide power outage overnight, according to a spokeswoman for North Atlantic Refining.

A statement issued this morning emphasized there was no fire at the facility — responding to incorrect reports of a fire made by some media outlets earlier today.

“Last evening North Atlantic Refining experienced a site-wide power outage at our facility in Come By Chance. There was no fire and therefore no injuries resulting from the power outage,” reads the statement from North Atlantic Refining spokeswoman Gloria Slade.

“Power has since been restored to our refinery and we are closely assessing our equipment and doing some required maintenance work before we start-up.”

The Arnold’s Cove and Come by Chance volunteer fire departments responded to the outage and assisted in traffic control on Refinery Road.

“Traffic control is done as a precautionary measure in this type of outage,” she stated.

A spokeswoman for Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro cofnirmed the outage started around 5 p.m. and power was restored 9:20 p.m.

"We had a trip at the Come By Chance terminal station and it knocked out the two transmission lines that provide power to the refinery," said spokeswoman Merissa King.
