Frank Fagan will be the province’s new lieutenant governor, Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced today.
Fagan spent more than 40 years in the telecommunications industry — 25 of that at the senior executive level. He retired in July 2008 as the chief operating officer of Bell Aliant, one of North America’s largest regional communications providers.
He began his career in at age 17 in 1962 as a linesman with Newfoundland Telephone, and rose rapidly through the company, finally becoming executive vice president and chief operating officer for Aliant.
Fagan will take over for Lt.-Gov. John Carnell Crosbie. Crosbie became the 12th Lieutenant Governor of Newfoundland and Labrador in February 2008 following a distinguished career in public life and the law.
"Mr. Fagan has dedicated himself to the betterment of his province as a volunteer, philanthropist, and business leader," Prime Minister Stephen Harper said in a news release.
"He is a community minded individual through and through, and I am confident that he will serve his province exceptionally as Lieutenant Governor."
Fagan had a successful career in the telecommunications sector and was Executive Vice-President and Chief Operating Officer at Bell Aliant prior to his retirement in 2008. He is deeply involved in his community as a volunteer, leader and philanthropist with countless organizations, including the Health Care Foundation of St. John's, Junior Achievement Newfoundland and Labrador Business Hall of Fame, and the Film Producers Association of Newfoundland and Labrador.
In addition, Fagan is the founding member of the Literacy Foundation and the Newfoundland Chapter of the Telecom Pioneers of America. He has also been instrumental in integrating people with developmental disabilities into the workforce and the community.
For his dedicated service, Fagan has received widespread recognition, including being appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2011.
Lieutenant Governors are appointed by His Excellency the Governor General on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. They serve five-year terms, during which they act as their provinces' vice-regal representatives.
The position of Lieutenant Governor, a uniquely Canadian institution, was created in 1867 by the British North America Act, now known as The Constitution Act. A
