A snowfall warning is still in effect for St. John's and parts of the Avalon Peninsula today.

Environment Canada says snow at times heavy will begin near noon in the St. John's area, with an expected accumulation of 10 cms,

Up to 15 to 20 cms is expected along the Southern Avalon, with lower amounts to the west and north.

Announcements:

• The presentation of the Lawrence Jackson Writers’ Award scheduled for tonight is postponed due to weather, as is the regular monthly meeting of the A.C. Hunter Library Book Club. The presentation will be rescheduled and a new date and time will be announced as soon as details are confirmed.

• City of St. John’s announces that due to road and weather conditions, GoBus Accessible Transit is experiencing delays.

The weather office says a low pressure system will pass southeast of the Avalon Peninsula.

Snow from the system has already begun over the Southeastern Avalon Peninsula and will spread northwestward through the day.

The snow is expected to taper off to a few flurries tonight.

Environment Canada says the potential exists for larger accumulations to push further west, but this will depend on the exact track of the system.

Blowing snow is forecast over exposed areas late this afternoon, with winds becoming northeast 30 kms an hour, gusting to 50 kms an hour.

The weather office is cautioning about the potential development of dangerous winter weather conditions on the Avalon today.

The public is advised to monitor future Environment Canada bulletins as warnings may be extended.

Northern Peninsula communities without power

Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro (Hydro) is still reporting power outages to some customers on the Northern Peninsula, but says crews are working to investigate the cause and restore power.

Customers in L’anse Au Meadows, Hay Cove, Gunners Cove, Notty Bay, Straights View, St. Lunaire-Griquet and Quirpon remain without power.

Power had been restored to some customers in these communities Tuesday night, but additional equipment issues caused an outage to all customers around 10:30 p.m.

All customers in St. Carol's and Great Brehat also lost power around 10:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Hydro says crews worked Tuesday night until a mandatory rest period about 11 p.m. The company says  that these rest periods are important to ensure safety of the crews.

Customers in all communities in Southern Labrador and the Northern Peninsula are advised that they may experience intermittent outages today due to continuing high winds and storm conditions.

Hydro says it apologizes for any inconvenience and appreciates the patience of its customers.

Updates from the Hydro Power Outages and Emergencies line  are available 24 hours at 1-888-737-1296.  Updates are also provided at www.facebook.com/NLHydro and Twitter.com/NLHydro.
