The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Friday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Arts & Entertainment section.

• The City of St. John’s is considering assessing partially constructed buildings as a means to generate more taxes — and that’s just another way of nailing the housing industry, builders say.

Coming on the heels of extra fees brought in by the city in its 2013 budget “This is crazy,” said Victoria Belbin of the of the Canadian Home Builders’ Association of Newfoundland and Labrador. “We have developers here doing multi-unit buildings and this could potentially add on well over $10,000 more per unit and again who pays? The people looking to buy homes. … the headline of your story should say, ‘Houses in St. John’s are going to get more expensive because of the city.’”

• It’s doubling the size of the school of engineering. Buildings are springing up left and right. Research funding is steadily increasing, and oh, it’s buying up the Battery Hotel, just for good measure.

Memorial University President Gary Kachanoski spoke to the Rotary Club of St. John’s Thursday afternoon, and he painted a picture of an exciting time for the university.

• When a judge sentenced a man who sexually assaulted a three-year-old girl to a year in jail, her mother shook her head in disbelief.

“I’m in shock. Three years, we’ve been waiting and preparing for today and the court system has failed us,” the woman told reporters Thursday after Reginald Joseph O’Keefe of Mount Pearl was sentenced in Newfoundland Supreme Court in St. John’s.
