Man charged with aggravated assault to make court appearance

A 23-year-old man charged following a downtown altercation in January — in which another man received stab wounds — will make his first court appearance Feb. 26.

Yshan Rankothgedera has been charged with aggravated assault, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for dangerous purpose.

The RNC said patrol officers, forensic identification services and the criminal investigation division members responded to a call of an assault with a weapon in the area of Water Street and Adelaide Street around 2:54 a.m. on Jan. 13.

A 41-year-old man and the accused reportedly entered into an altercation, which escalated. One man received minor injuries while the second man received injuries that appeared to be stab wounds.

Both men were taken to hospital and treated for what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries.
