True to his word that he would know by the end of this week, Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor Scott Simms has made a decision on whether or not he will leave Ottawa to seek the top seat with the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador.

“No…I’m not running…I will not at this time be seeking the leadership of the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador,” Mr. Simms told The Beacon Friday afternoon while waiting for a flight to take him from St. John’s to Gander.

“It was a more personal thing than anything else in why I decided this. I was quite honoured and privileged to be considered and (then) asked to seek the leadership, but the time just isn’t right for me now.”

For the past three weeks, Mr. Simms has been wooed by provincial Liberal supporters on numerous fronts, including in-person, telephone conversations and emails, to accept the challenge of becoming the Party’s leader — and possibly the next Premier.

However, he said he had similar correspondence with supporters along the way hoping he would stay in his current seat, and continue to work in Ottawa on behalf of the people of Bonavista-Gander-Grand Falls-Windsor.

“The feedback I got on both sides of the issue was great, and I certainly appreciate and thank the people who I talked to on both sides,” he said. “It (the decision) got tougher as the time went on, and more people gave me advice…There’s a lot of life in the Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador…maybe a lot more than I had anticipated.

“In the end, it came down to what was best for me personally at this time in my life.”

He was wooed by no one. Just looking for some free publicity and air time. NOT LEADERSHIP material at all...never was never will be.

Good for him. He keeps his word and I'm spared looking at the optical illusion of a suit that he's wearing. It's a win win situation.

Leave a cushy do nothing all day job in Ottawa to take over the shambles that is the Liberal party of NL? Gee...can't see why he wouldn't want to do that...LOL A million dollars in debt, wallowing at under 20% in the polls, visionless... clueless....yep, I'm sure they are lining up to take on that disaster...makes me laugh.

I made a similar comment last time this came up; Simms only cares about himself. I don't know why the provincial Liberals would even want him, when a politician wants to be in a leadership position they should at least pretend to have some ideals, vision, all that good stuff. With Simms it's all about me, me, me and he doesn't make any attempt to hide that. At least he's honest about it, I'll give him credit for that, but if this is the best the Liberals can come up with then they are in even worse shape than I thought.
