UPDATE: Winter storm rolls over Avalon

Noon, Saturday: Environment Canada's latest forecasts warn of heavy snow, strong winds and blowing snow today and Sunday with between 25 and 45 centimetres expected by Sunday night.

Here is what the storm warning has to say:

"An intense low pressure system east of Cape Cod will continue to deepen today as it tracks south of Nova Scotia. The low will begin to gradually weaken as it approaches the Southern Avalon on Sunday night. A warm front extending northeastward from this low will approach Newfoundland today and will track across the Avalon Peninsula overnight. Snow at times heavy, high winds and blowing snow will develop today ahead of this feature.

"For the Avalon and Burin peninsulas: snow has begun and will become at times heavy in the south and rapidly spread northward. Winds will increase this afternoon with northeasterly gusts between 80 and 100 km/hour this evening. The heavy snow and high winds will result in near whiteout conditions in blowing snow. Conditions will improve overnight as the snow mixes with ice pellets before changing to freezing rain and eventually to rain showers on Sunday morning. The rain showers are expected to change back to snow late Sunday as the low tracks eastward. Total snowfall amounts of 15 to 25 centimetres are expected by Sunday morning.

"For Southwestern Newfoundland: snow has developed and will become at times heavy near noon. Northeasterly winds will steadily increase today with gusts up to 120 km/hour expected along parts of the coast tonight and Sunday. The high winds and heavy snow will combine to give blizzard like conditions this afternoon through to Sunday. Total snowfall amounts between 25 and 35 centimetres are expected by Sunday evening.

"For Central and Eastern Newfoundland: snow will develop this afternoon and will become at times heavy tonight. Northeasterly winds will increase later today with gusts up to 80 km/hour expected this evening and gusts up to 100 km/hour expected along parts of the coast on Sunday. The high winds and heavy snow will combine to give blizzard like conditions tonight through to Sunday. Total snowfall amounts between 20 and 45 centimetres are expected by Sunday evening."

The following cancellations have been issued by the town of Conception Bay South.

Due to impending weather conditions, the snowball tournament that was scheduled to take place Feb. 9 - 10 as part of Winterfest in CBS has been postponed until Feb. 16 - 17.

Also due to impending weather conditions, zumba for kids with sisters in fitness that was scheduled for Feb 9 from 2:00 - 3:00 p.m. as part of Winterfest in CBS has been postponed.
