Fire and Emergency Services – Newfoundland and Labrador (FES-NL) is reminding residents to consider potential risks before participating in outdoor winter activities.

Anyone hiking, camping, snowmobiling, hunting or fishing are encouraged to use caution and plan ahead.

FES-NL cautions that people who engage in recreational outdoor activities during adverse weather conditions experienced in the province could be endangering their own lives and weather, at times, can hamper potential rescue efforts and further endanger the lives of emergency personnel.

FES-NL officials urge all residents to plan ahead and monitor local forecasts to ensure a safe return home.

Family and friends should be made aware of planned routes of travel and residents should be prepared to stay out for longer periods, should weather conditions prohibit search and rescue efforts.

In addition, the following equipment should be part of any plan for outdoor activities:

• Emergency flares;

• Additional battery power for cellular or satellite phones;

• GPS devices or a standard compass;

• Matches in a water-proof case;

• High-energy food;

• Necessary medication.
