Possible fraudulent activity at St. Patrick's Parish reported to RNC

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of St. John's has asked the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary to investigate possible fraudulent activity at St. Patrick's Parish in St. John's.

A statement released today by Anne Walsh, executive assistant to Archbishop Martin Currie, says suspicions of fraudulent activity surrounding a former lay employee arose in the latter part of 2012.

The parish priest reported his suspicions to the Archdiocesan Business Office and immediately, external forensic auditors were brought in to examine the books and records of the parish.

The statement says this week the Archdiocesan Business Office received the results of this forensic examination and turned the matter over to the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary.

The archdiocese says "At the RNC’s request, we have been asked to make no further comment so as not to jeopardize the results of their investigation."

Ihave to disagree with the above comment because who but the LayEMPLOYEE WOULD OR COULD BENIFIT if the investigation shows wrongdoing.Secondly it does not serve any justifiable purpose to intimate that somehow the 'church' is going going to gain from this action is simply ludicrous.Maybe everyone would be best served if we all left this matter with the policenow.

I guess the parish (church in general) now has a better understanding how it feels when something is taken away from you.....hurts doesn't it. If only they turned over info (instead of hiding it) to the authorities from the past as quickly, a lot of young boys lives may have turned out differently. Imagine, a theft investigation takes one year, abuse takes fourty. Amazing how these guys can sleep at night (alone).

Yes. It hasn't been the same there since Mons. Doody retired. And I heard the church is up for sale now. Who benefits from that money. I doubt its the former employee......
