A fire early Saturday afternoon demolished a garage and caused some slight damage to a home at 687 Thorburn Road.
The St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived at the scene to find the garage fully engulfed in fire.
“We concentrated our efforts when we arrived on saving the house and the vehicle that was just outside that structure,” said St. John’s Regional Fire Department shift superintendent, Don Byrne.
Fire crews were successful in their efforts. The garage was completely destroyed but the house located next to it had minor damage to the siding only and the vehicle was unharmed.
There were, however, at least two vehicles inside the garage that were destroyed.
A woman described as having mobility issues was removed from the home as a safety precaution, as was a dog.
There were no injuries.
Traffic on Thorburn Road was stopped as water had to be pumped from the nearest hydrant which was a kilometer away.
There was an explosion inside the garage, though it’s unknown what caused it at this time. It will be determined through further investigation. As part of the investigation, the RNC is looking into what the garage was used for and what kinds of flammable and explosive products may have been inside.
