A resident of the Labrador community of Makkovik who was missing for over 24 hours has been found.

According to an RCMP news release, the 31-year-old male was located on a groomed snowmobile trail halfway between Makkovik and Postville at 10:30 a.m. Sunday. His snowmobile reportedly broke down.

A Universal Helicopters aircraft transported the man to a clinic in Makkovik, where he was assessed and later released.

Police said the man was reported missing the night before at 7:30 p.m. He left his home on a snowmobile at 2:30 a.m. Saturday to travel to a cabin. Family members had already visited the cabin and searched the local area.

Ground search and rescue teams from Makkovik and Postville began a search. A Cormorant helicopter joined the search at first light Sunday.

Police are advising residents heading outdoors for extended periods of time to take precautions to ensure their safety. They suggest snowmobilers ride with a partner, dress appropriately and check local weather reports.

Police recommend that snowmobilers inform others of their plans, take extra food and clothing, be aware of ice conditions, and make use of a Global Positioning System device if it is available.

I certainly am not wishing any harm had come to this man; however, what a total waste of taxpayers' money to have to search for a 31 yr. old who was stupid enough to leave alone to go to a cabin at 2:30 A.M.
