The Department of Fisheries and Oceans will be holding seal information sessions next month on the Northern Peninsula for new applicants requesting personal use and temporary seal licences.
The first session is scheduled for Wednesday, March 6 beginning at 7 p.m. at the Plum Point Motel.
Another session will be held Wednesday, March 13 in St. Anthony, beginning at 7 p.m. at the Grenfell Heritage Hotel and Suites.
Anyone interested in obtaining a licence for the 2013 seal fishery can register by contacting the DFO licencing office in St. Anthony by phoning 709-454-3076.
People obtaining a new personal use or a temporary licence must have:
— Proof of age, 18 or older;
— A firearms safety/hunter education certificate;
— Proof they have attended a seal information session.
As with any sealing activity, DFO says personal use seal licence holders must follow the Marine Mammal Regulations and conditions of licence. All sealing activity is also monitored by fishery officers.
DFO says seal information sessions for new licence applicants will include training in the three-step process of ensuring humane death.
