Environment Canada has issued a warning about strong southwesterly winds gusting up to 100 kms/h this afternoon on the Burin Peninsula.

The weather office says an intense low pressure system just west of Port aux Basques will track slowly eastward and cross Newfoundland tonight.

High winds are expected to continue over the Burin Peninsula early this afternoon, but diminish later today as the low weakens.

In addition, Environment Canada says high waves and pounding surf are expected along the southern coast, from Port aux Basques to Cape Race, this afternoon.

It says, "These large waves could be potentially damaging to coastal infrastructure and coastlines. The public is advised to keep a safe distance from the shoreline due to the rapid approach of these large waves."

In parts of coastal Labrador, snow, blowing snow and high winds have prompted warnings for Hopedale and vicinity, Postville, Makkovik and Cartwright to Black Tickle.

The weather office says an intense low pressure system over the Cabot Strait will weaken as it slowly tracks eastward today and across Newfoundland tonight.

Poor visibility from blowing snow are expected tonight and Tuesday in Hopedale and vicinity.

A winter storm warning is in effect for Postville - Makkovik and Cartwright to Black Tickle where 15 to 35 cms of snow is forecast and winds gusting between 80 and 100 kms/h are expected to persist today.
