The Telegram website offers only a sample of the stories our reporters, editors and photographers work hard to get to the public every day.

Tuesday’s full edition of The Telegram, on the other hand, contains much, much more, from news to opinion to our expanded Family section.

• The government has imposed a blanket hiring freeze across the civil service, in the first concrete move to cut back on spending since Finance Minister Jerome Kennedy announced the government is facing a forecast $1.6-billion deficit next year.

Public-sector union leaders warn this will translate into service reductions for citizens, and Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) representative Wayne Lucas said he sees the move as “extremely provocative” as negotiators for workers and the government try to hammer out a new contract.

• The director of the Irish Coast Guard is ready for the MV Lyubov Orlova if the vessel enters his country’s waters, but he has reason to believe Ireland may not be the drifting cruise ship’s destination after all.

“If it turns out to be the vessel, it’s more heading toward Iceland than towards us,” says Chris Reynolds.

Reynolds’ concerns were raised this past Friday when he was speaking to the Canadian Coast Guard on an unrelated matter and was brought up to speed on the slow, but determined, progress of the Orlova across the North Atlantic.

• The president of the union that represents provincial ferry workers says the province’s decision to decommission the Nonia swing vessel shows the government needs to invest in new ferries.

“That’s a prime example of the costs that you can incur when you try to cut corners,” said Carol Furlong, president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees.
