A 32-year-old man from Goose Bay is facing charges after he allegedly robbed a store with a baseball bat and tried to make his getaway by stealing a water and sewer truck which he drove into a snowbank a short distance away.
The RCMP in Happy Valley/Goose Bay responded to the report of the robbery about 10:05 a.m. today.
Police say a man was observed outdoors in the Spruce Park area yelling with a baseball bat in his hands. The man broke into a house and then entered a convenience store, slamming the baseball bat on the counter threatening staff.
The male then fled the store and jumped into a town water/sewer truck and threatened the driver before stealing the truck. He then drove the truck a short distance where it went off the road and into a snow bank.
The man was arrested a short time later in the area without incident.
No one was injured during the incident.
Charges against the man include: robbery with violence, assault with a weapon, theft of a motor vehicle, possession of a weapon dangerous to public peace, possession of cocaine and impaired operation of a motor vehicle.
The accused is in custody and will be in provincial court Wednesday for a bail hearing.
Labrador District RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) is assisting the Happy Valley/Goose Bay Detachment with the investigation.
