Environment Canada has a winter storm watch for the Burin Peninsula and south coast areas, with potentially significant snowfall tonight and Thursday.
A developing low pressure system will pass south of Newfoundland on Thursday. Snow ahead of this system will begin over the Port aux Basques region this evening and then spread eastward along the south coast overnight.
Snow will then spread to most other areas of the island during the day on Thursday.
At this time the highest snowfall accumulations are expected along the south coast from Port aux Basques to the Burin Peninsula.
In addition, strong easterly winds will develop over southwestern Newfoundland ahead of the low tonight. Wind gusts to 100 km/h are expected in the Wreckhouse area this evening and after midnight.
For the St. John’s area tonight, periods of drizzle or freezing drizzle is in the forecast. Winds are expected to be from the northwest 20 km/h becoming light this evening. Low minus 1 C.
For Thursday, it’s expected to be cloudy with snow beginning late in the morning. Amount five to 10 cms. Wind are forecast to be east 30 kms/h gusting to 50 kms/h in the morning. High temperature around zero.
