The sad thing about this is that many or most of the paents will read this story or the book and say "not my son", he still has a chance. I have witnessed first hand kids being dragged to the rink by parents and not because the child wanted to be there.

I am 47, played hockey most of my life. Actually only stopped at 41 due to loosing interest. I chased that very dream, The ever elusive NHL. I now manage a busy optical but am very happy I played, and played hard, made some great friends, met some great people also even travelled around the island. Hockey is not what it used to be, FUN. Alot of politics and BS today aswell as ridiculous amounts of $$$$. At one point we spent in excess of over $2000 for one season of Adam all-star hockey for our son. Reality has to be a part of everyone's life...At the end of the day it should be FUN and not looked at as a JOB.

Great article. Chasing an NHL spot is a low chance pursuit compared to other careers. For example, the NHL has only 600 player spots available whereas Google, Microsoft and Apple employ approximately 200,000 people.
