Finley says Conservatives have set dollar ’targets’ for EI fraud but not quotas

OTTAWA — The federal government denies it has given civil servants quotas for catching employment insurance fraud — but now says there are performance objectives in place.

Human Resources Minister Diane Finley had flatly denied previous reports that EI investigators have been given monthly dollar quotas.

However government documents obtained by Montreal newspaper Le Devoir show civil servants are expected to find $485,000 each in fraudulent EI claims each year — a total that corresponds to the previously reported $40,000 monthly quota.

NDP Leader Tom Mulcair says the Conservatives are treating the unemployed like criminals and contrasts their pursuit of EI claimants with the expense scandal swirling around Conservative appointees in the Senate.

Finley told Mulcair that EI investigators do have performance objectives but she says there’s a big difference between targets and quotas.

About time to start cracking down on the Welfare i'd say. See how many of these are working under the table for cash and collecting welfare as well. The government would find much more money that way. You can call the office and report these people only to find that "they dont have enough resources to check these reports out". Leave the people that at least try to make a living most of the year alone.

The real fraud is that the majority of people paying into it aren't eligible to collect it, especially part-time workers. It is also interesting that this is the 25th anniversary of the Free Trade Agreement which saw industrial jobs leave the country while private companies could sue and elected government for enacting policy that put people's interests ahead of corporate interests. Blaming the poor and unemployed for being victims of the economic policies of the wealthy is a common right –wing tactic to divide the working class. Only the weak-minded would not be able to see that this is yet another distraction from our masters in Ottawa.

If you want to coolect on money on stuff you paid into, there are ways of fixing that compleltely on your own....first, crash your car. Then burn down your house. Finally, if that isn't enough, you can always die. All these things are insureable events, and based on the exact same principle ---- that not everyone who pays in makes a claim. In Newfoundland, EI is seen --- by EVERYIONE ---- as a simple right, "free money" from that most reviled Ottawa, a personal payment for putting up with it all, and something which steady work and careers "interferes with". Et voila.....

David: WOW! The point he/she is making is that if you are paying into insurance you should be able to collect from it IF you need it. 60% of workers aren't able to collect EI even though they pay into it. Would you buy insurance if you were not allowed to make a claim if there was an accident? Then again, I'm just a Newfoundlander so your logic is beyond me.

About time for a crackdown on EI fraud. This is one of the most abused programs in the system and kudos for the govt for trying to deal with the abuse. Long overdue.
